November-December 1999
New Zealand reminded me a lot of coastal British Columbia geographically and it's a perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s got volcanoes, great beaches, large mountain ranges, beautiful fjords and a lot more. Most things are economically priced and the people are extremely friendly. You always get that in places with smaller populations that have a sense of community.

This is Hot Water Beach on the North Island. If you dig down a few feet at low tide, you reach the hot springs and get a nice sand hot-tub out of the deal. We had trouble getting the temperature right. Either it was far too hot to get in, too cold or a big wave would break down the sides.
