Laos
South-East Asia
May, 1998

Laos is the gem of South-East Asia when it comes to exploring underdeveloped regions the hard way: on very, very bumpy roads. The people are the most genuine in the area, probably because tourist hasn’t hit as hard as hit has in neighbouring countries Vietnam and Thailand. I only spent a few weeks here, but thoroughly enjoyed all my time here.

Laos is a place that you visit to understand the culture and see the countryside and the people.

These Fastboats cruise the Mekong at 50-60kph and dodge the limestone islands as you go. Very nerve-racking! Passengers wear crash helmuts and life-perserves. No other boat I have been on yet in S.E. Asia offers such safety measures!
