Laos
May, 1998
Laos is the gem of South-East Asia when it comes to exploring underdeveloped regions the hard way: on very, very bumpy roads. The people are the most genuine in the area, probably because tourist hasn’t hit as hard as hit has in neighbouring countries Vietnam and Thailand. I only spent a few weeks here, but thoroughly enjoyed all my time here.
Laos is a place that you visit to understand the culture and see the countryside and the people.

In Lao, our mode of transportation are these "canoes" with big fat engines on them. These Fastboats cruise the Mekong at 50-60kph and dodge the limestone islands as you go. Very nerve-racking! Passengers wear crash helmuts and life-perserves. No other boat I have been on yet in S.E. Asia offers such safety measures!
